![]() Before STAR TREK made him one of the hottest young stars currently in demand, Chris Pine was working steadily on a bunch of smaller projects. Now that our new Captain Kirk has piloted the Enterprise and its crew into the critical and popular stratosphere, any project with the name “Chris Pine” attached is going to get a lot of buzz – even if it’s just an independent flick that not a lot of people have heard of. A few months ago, that film was CARRIERS, Alex and David Pastor’s deadly virus flick, starring Pine. While CARRIERS didn’t break any box office records (heck, it was only in theaters for a week), it still got a bunch of buzz just from Pine’s name alone. The next example of the Pine-effect could very well be SMALL TOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, a little indie from first-time feature writer and director Ryan Craig. The film, slated for release sometime in 2010, stars Pine as a country singer-songwriter with a bit of a conflict on his hands. Hit the jump to see the full poster for SMALL TOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, and to learn a bit more about Pine’s next release.

The film sold an estimated 5.7 million discs its first week out, according to Home Media Magazine market research — a figure that includes all of North America as well as the rental market. First-week Blu-ray Disc sales are pegged at 1.1 million.

We at MTV News couldn’t be more grateful that the U.S.S. Enterprise is once again patrolling outer space, which is why Abrams and Pine are two of the entertainers we’re most thankful for in 2009. In a recent chat with MTV News, both these guys reflected on the experience of making “Trek,” revealed some secrets about the project that we never knew and talked about the future of the franchise. MTV: Congratulations, you represent two of the people we are most thankful for this year! This is the first twosome we’ve ever honored. Do you have any speeches prepared? J.J. Abrams: Chris does. Chris Pine: What? I will say I feel pretty honored because I know you’ve done Harrison Ford and Robert Downey Jr. and a bunch of people I really love, so thank you — this is pretty big for me.

Chris was chosen as one of the five lucky men to be featured on their own cover for the annual GQ “Man of the Year” issue! Chris is featured as “Breakout of the Year” on his magazine cover, which I cannot agree with more! The magazine hits newsstands Monday, November 16th from what I hear, so be sure to grab you a copy quick because I’m sure they will sell fast! Gallery Link: Magazines / Publications > GQ Magazine ( December 2009 ) Be sure to stay tuned, I’ll have ultra high quality scans soon as well as the actual photoshoot for this issue. Nov

After being dumped in theaters this past September, the Chris Pine (Star Trek) thriller Carriers is coming to rental DVD on December 8, 2009 from Paramount Home Entertainment. A full DVD release is yet to be announced, but is expected in 4 to 6 weeks after the release. Determined to escape a deadly virus, four teens set out in search of an uncontaminated refuge. As they travel across the decimated landscape of America, they encounter a truth far more horrifying than the virus they are trying to survive. Co-starring Piper Perabo (Coyote Ugly), Emily VanCamp (“Brothers & Sisters”), and Emmy®-nominee Chris Meloni (“Law and Order: SVU”) CARRIERS is a terrifying journey into a world where laws and rules no longer apply, and no one can be trusted – not even your friends. The film was written and directed by Alex & David Pastor. The CARRIERS DVD is presented in widescreen enhanced for 16:9 televisions with Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround, Spanish 5.1 Surround and English, French and Spanish subtitles. The DVD will be available for sale four to six weeks after its rental street date. Nov

It looks pretty interesting, though hearing Chris’s voice with all the different emotions I found mildly entertaining.

According to Pajiba, Star Trek’s Chris Pine signed on to star in the film in May, but as of six weeks ago, his status changed from starring to attached. Pine is scheduled to meet with the film’s top directorial candidate before sealing the deal. As for the director, Pajiba says the individual set to rendezvous with Pine is not Affleck. If Pine does sign on to star, the role will be a great departure from Star Trek’s James T. Kirk. The Blade Itself is based on the Marcus Sakey novel about a pair of young friends, Danny and Evan, who commit a slew of petty crimes together until something goes horribly wrong. Years later, we meet the boys again who have grown to lead completely different lives. Danny has a family and a successful career but Evan is an ex-con with a vengeance. Danny is forced to do whatever it takes to protect the ones he loves from his dark past. Don’t think Pine can hack it in a gritty crime film? Check out Bottle Shock. It’s as far from a crime film as you can get, but it does show the guy is versatile. He’ll be putting that resourcefulness to good use in the coming years. Since the release of Star Trek, Chris has signed on to a handful of projects. There’s The Art of Taking Money, Unstoppable and, most recently, buzz about Pine becoming the new Jack Ryan. Maybe if all goes well with The Blade Itself, Affleck will give him some tips on portraying iconic CIA agent. |
