Steve Weintraub of Collider.com Recently caught up with with producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to talk about his upcoming action thriller Salt, whom also will produce Chris’s upcoming Jack Ryan project ‘Moscow’. Here is what he had to say:
Finally, I asked him what projects are bubbling up to the surface and he said the next Jack Ryan movie, Moscow, that Chris Pine is attached to and The Associate – which is a John Grisham book that Shia Labeouf’s attached to. When I asked how the script was for the Jack Ryan movie, he said they had a great one and he is hoping to start shooting late winter/early spring.
Do you mind me asking what’s bubbling up what’s bubbling to the surface right now for you?
Lorenzo: Well, we’re hoping to get Jack Ryan off the ground with Chris Pine and that’s really exciting. And this movie called The Associate which is a John Grisham book that Shia Labeouf’s attached to. We’re hoping to get that off the ground shortly, too.
SW: I spoke to somebody about the Jack Ryan project and the last time I spoke it was I think I want to say it was somehow tied to Moscow? Am I wrong about that?
Lorenzo: It’s called Moscow.
That’s right. So I guess, do you guys have a script? Or just figuring out his….
Lorenzo: We have a very good script. I think it’s…I’m very happy with where we are today and we’re looking forward to…maybe with a little luck starting next late winter/early spring.
Oh this year or early next year?
Lorenzo: Of early next year, yeah.

Last October Paramount Pictures was in the process of locking down Star Trek star Chris Pine to play Jack Ryan, the CIA analyst character created by bestselling author Tom Clancy. Shortly thereafter Pine was officially the fourth actor to play Ryan after Alec Baldwin (The Hunt for Red October), Harrison Ford (Clear and Present Danger and Patriot Games), and Ben Affleck (The Sum of All Fears).
We haven’t heard much since, but a source for Pajiba has provided further details on Pine’s mission. Screenwriter Adam Cozad has stepped in to rewrite an original draft by Hossein Amini for a story that won’t be based on a Clancy novel.
The film, operating under the working title Moscow, will center on Ryan as a financial analyst to a billionaire employer in Moscow. It’s here he is framed to take the fall for a terrorist plot designed to collapse the U.S. economy. It essentially becomes a chase movie where Ryan must clear his name, prevent the terrorist attack, and save his captured wife before time runs out.
Dustin Rowles at Pajiba points out this sounds similar to Cozad’s geopolitical drama Dubai, his first script deal that sold to Lorenzo Di Bonaventura in 2007 with Star Trek villain Eric Bana attached as a producer. Other than the relocation, the two stories of a man trying to stop the collapse of the economy and prove his innocence sound extremely close.
While it’s unfortunate they aren’t returning to Clancy’s extensive library, it seems like Paramount is assembling a timely adventure for their young, rebooted franchise. Both the studio and Pine stand to reap the benefits if this becomes their second hit collaboration, so I’m curious to see who they’re lining up to direct. Sam Raimi was interested in the material before, but passed to focus on a now defunct Spider-Man 4. Maybe they can lure him back.

So it’s official. First Alec Baldwin, followed by Harrison Ford, then Ben Affleck for a hot minute, and now Chris Pine. The “Star Trek” star will take over the role of Jack Ryan in the first adaptation of Tom Clancy’s book series since 2002′s “The Sum of All Fears.”
Just before this confirmation dropped—courtesy of producer Mace Neufeld—MTV News spoke with Pine about the prospect of becoming Ryan on-screen. After blowing people away with his reworking of William Shatner’s iconic take on James T. Kirk, how hard could it be to make Ryan his own? No easy feat, Pine said, but undoubtedly less daunting than his “Star Trek” challenge.
“I think it’s because Mr. Shatner’s portrayal of the character was so specific, [Jack Ryan] is a different beast,” Pine explained. “If you were to poll people, I think eight out of 10 people could tell you what role Shatner made famous. I think a lot fewer people could make that specific association between those actors and Jack Ryan. As great a job as those actors did, it’s just a different deal.”
Is there one Ryan –- Baldwin in “The Hunt for Red October,” Ford in “Patriot Games” and “Clear and Present Danger” — that stands out for Pine as the finest take on this CIA superstar? “No hyperbole, I like ‘em both so much,” Pine said of the first two Ryan actors. “They’re both huge heroes of mine. But I might prefer Baldwin doing the Canteen Boy sketch on ‘SNL’ the most!”

Producer Mace Neufeld spoke this morning at the Invictus press conference where he also updated the status of the next Jack Ryan film, set to star Chris Pine.
Neufeld confirmed that the new as-of-yet-untitled project will not be based on a Tom Clancy novel but will, instead, be an original screenplay.
The character of Jack Ryan has previously appeared in the Clancy adaptations The Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger and The Sum of All Fears, the latter of which represented a previous attempt to reboot the franchise with a younger actor in the lead. Neufeld says that, while the plan is still to skew young with the casting of Pine, the story will not be an “origin story.”
“We pick him up when he’s on Wall Street,” says Neufeld, “…[but] the Jack Ryan movies have never been action films. They’re kind of ‘thinking man’s thrillers.’ Jack is referred to as a ‘water-walker’ because of his ability to jump ahead to conclusions. That’s very big in all the Jack Ryan films and that’s how we want to portray him. He’s a teacher. He’s a historian. He’s a linguist. And he’s really smart.”
The first draft has been completed by Hossein Amini and a rewrite by Adam Cozad is set to start soon.
