Chris Pine, star of films such as “Star Trek” and “Unstoppable,” recently made his country music debut with the release of “Someday Came Today” which he performed in the film “Small Town Saturday Night” as character Rhett Ryan. The song is now available for download ($.99) in iTunes.

Also to those wondering if and when it will be released in your area, if you live outside of The United States and Canada than listen up! I’ve been told at the moment it does not have a distributor in The UK, which is the issue elsewhere too. For now the best solution is to buy the DVD online from websites like Amazon.com and make sure you have a DVD Player that can play Region 1 discs.

If there is anymore information about releases in other areas I will let you guys know.

Just days before Rhett (Chris Pine) is leaving for Nashville to pursue a lifelong dream of being a singer/songwriter, his girlfriend Samantha (Bre Blair) realizes that “his” future may not be “their” future. This news comes as a shock to Rhett, and he is faced with having to choose between following his dream and staying in his hometown in order to be with the woman he loves.

A few months ago, that film was CARRIERS, Alex and David Pastor’s deadly virus flick, starring Pine. While CARRIERS didn’t break any box office records (heck, it was only in theaters for a week), it still got a bunch of buzz just from Pine’s name alone. The next example of the Pine-effect could very well be SMALL TOWN SATURDAY NIGHT, a little indie from first-time feature writer and director Ryan Craig. The film, slated for release sometime in 2010, stars Pine as a country singer-songwriter with a bit of a conflict on his hands.

The poster for SMALL TOWN SATURDAY NIGHT is mining Hallmark movie-of-the-week territory, but putting Pine’s face and name at the forefront at least show that the marketing team behind the film understand what’s probably going to be the biggest draw for the indie. Chris Pine! OMG! Singing! Guitar-playing! I can’t mock, I’ll be there.

The film’s IMDb page gives the synopsis for the film as such:

“Just days before leaving for Nashville, Rhett Ryan (Pine) discovers that the desire to follow his dream conflicts with his desire to be with the woman he loves. While Samantha (Bre Blair) does love the singer-songwriter, she starts to realize what’s best for her daughter and their future may not be what’s best for him. Tommy Carson (Shawn Christian) works around the clock to keep the peace in Prospect, but Donny (John Hawkes), who is on a downward spiral, makes this even more difficult for the deputy. And Les (Adam Hendershott) just wants to fit in with his big brother’s friends, but his overbearing mother desperately wants him to stand out. The subtle interconnections of these character’s lives will bring them all closer together, culminating in Rhett’s final performance.”

Since this is Craig’s first feature, I don’t know what to expect, but I do know that I am looking forward to seeing Pine in a small, character-driven flick. After seeing him not only kick butt in STAR TREK, but burning up the small stage in “Farragut North” this past summer, I have no doubt that Pine is just getting started.

Pine led the cast in J J Abram’s summer hit Star Trekand stars here as an aspiring musician struggling to choose between following his dream of becoming a rock star and staying behind with the woman he loves. John Hawkes and Brent Briscoe add support.

“Chris Pine always brings a fantastic charisma to his roles and this film is no exception,” Bleiberg’s head of acquisitions Nicholas Donnermeyer said. “It’s great to see his charisma shine through as it has in Star Trek and Bottle Shock.”

Roman Kopelevich negotiated the deal on behalf of Bleiberg Entertainment with Kevin Iwashina of IP Advisors and Alan Grodin of Weissman, Wolff, et al on behalf of producers Charlie Mason and Justin Moore-Lewy.

Mason and Moore-Lewy are currently in production in Atlanta on the family film The Greening of Whitney Brown starring Aidan Quinn, Brooke Shields and Kris Kristofferson.

Beverly Hills-based Bleiberg Entertainment’s recent productions include Kirot and Paul Schrader’s Adam Resurrected with Jeff Goldblum and Willem Dafoe.

Pine’s upcoming projects include Tony Scott’s Unstoppable opposite Denzel Washington and the lead role in the next Jack Ryan project for Paramount.

What can fans your fans catch you in next?
There’s another “mainstream” picture that we shot up here where I live, up in the mountains, called ‘Small Town Saturday Night.’ I am in that, but we also provided a lot of production services for that project. We found all of the locations. There were over thirty locations, which for a low budget picture is a lot of moving around. Obviously, we found them at a real decent price or they wouldn’t be able to afford thirty plus locations. We contributed a lot to the production. Like I said, I am in it. Gigi has a little cameo in it as a matter of fact. The project features a lot of good actors. John Hawkes, Chris Pine, Robert Pine, Lin Shaye are in it. Of course Chris is now Captain Kirk. We just had a cast and crew screening on that picture about two months ago. I was talking to Chris and I went, “dude, are you having people jumping out of bushes with cameras?” and he goes, “yeah.” I go, “well, I really kind of like my level of celebrity dude. I said, “I live in a small mountain community and everybody kind of knows me, but nobody is all over me and I don’t have to live in a compound or put walls up all around me, but you may want to buy an island somewhere in the Bermudas. He goes, “I know man.” Chris is a very fine actor and I hope now that he is Captain Kirk, people go back and look at some of the other stuff he has done. He was in “Smokin’ Aces.” He was great in ‘Smokin’ Aces.’ He was in ‘Just My Luck,’ the Lindsay Lohan movie. He was great in that. For a young guy, he embraces character parts. I think it is because of the way he was brought up with his dad and his dad has always been a character actor. He’s a terrific actor and he has his head really screwed on tight, which made me feel good because he was all of a sudden catapulted into this part and into this kind of situation that he is now dealing with. I was a little concerned about it, but after talking to him at this cast and crew screening, he’s good for it. He’ll do great at whatever he does. I would think that that would find distribution sometime probably sooner than later, just due to the cast.
