The latest revival of the ‘Star Trek’ franchise beamed itself to the top of the box office this weekend with a whopping $72.5 million in ticket sales.

The J.J. Abrams directed film — starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Leonard Nimoy and Zoe Saldana — follows the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise as they attempt to stop an evil being whose mission of vengeance threatens all of mankind.

Dropping to No. 2 this week was Hugh Jackman’s superhero thriller ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine,’ which brought in $27 million, studio estimates showed.

  2. Carrie says:

It should be #1 – hell I saw it 3x opening weekend – if it was any less than #1 I’d be mad.

  3. Tenika says:

Not that $72 million isn’t a lot of money, but I thought it would make more. Every showing I went to was packed and I know lots of people who saw Star Trek and I’m the only person I know of who saw Wolverine, but Wolvering made more money. Weird

The officially number now stands at $79.3 million and that is just the domestic gross.

And Wolverine opened on more screens than TREK. 4400 Wolverine to 3800 Trek and still has more screen showings. Plus Wolverine had the upper hand in being part of a franchise that managed to stay relevant in the last 3-5 years, with the success of the X-MEN movies. That relevancy managed to help it build up a fairly large fan base. The last ST movie was the box office DUD Nemesis and that was 7 years ago. The last ST spinoff was Enterprise and that was a ratings disaster. So overall I say ST: XI is truly holding its own.

ST has never had mass audience appeal like say, Star Wars, so these numbers are whoppingly good. Even Paramount didn’t expect that much from the opening weekend. They projected $50-60 million opening weekend so they are dancing a jig right now.

In the end I think ST will make more money than Wolverine, due to the positive word of mouth and the mulitple viewings by folks much like myself.
