TNT saw decent success with The Alienist this past year and its returning with the same mystery-murder story, this time with material based on a true story with I Am the Night. Chris Pine is again teaming with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for the series.

The first trailer for the series has finally arrived, unveiling a dark noir set in the creepiest corners of Hollywood.

The fact-based story revolves around a girl named Fauna Hodel (India Eisley) who finds out she’s adopted, then runs away from home, determined to find her birth parents. The trail leads her all the way to the sinister Dr. George Hodel, a suspect in the Black Dahlia murder (for the murderinos out there: the real-life Hodel’s son, Steve Hodel, is a Los Angeles detective who has also accused his father of possibly being the Zodiac Killer and committing numerous other murders. Very chill, nothing to see here!).

Pine plays Jay Singletary, a “former Marine-turned-hack reporter/paparazzo,” as TNT puts it, which is one hell of a character journey. He closes in on Fauna’s story, determined to find the truth at the bottom of this grim rabbit hole. This is his Nightcrawler, baby. As the trailer unfolds, it becomes clear that Fauna’s journey also ties to some dark, cult-y circles of the Eyes Wide Shut variety. So that imagery, cradled by the trailer’s rickety score, makes for delectable nightmare fuel.

The mini-series, previously named “One Day She’ll Darken” premieres in January 2019.

Chris was seen earlier this week filming scenes for the TNT’s new six-part drama One Day She’ll Darken, based on the real-life of Fauna Hodel.

Chris plays Jay Singletary, a former Marine-turned-hack reporter probing the case of Fauna Hodel, who was given away by her white teenage mother to a black restroom attendant in a Nevada casino in 1949. The sinister trail leads him to infamous Hollywood gynecologist, Dr. George Hodel, a suspect in the infamous Black Dahlia murder of Elizabeth Short in Los Angeles in 1947.

He is also a producer on the bio series, based on Fauna’s bestseller of the same name, due to air next year.

Hello, Pine-nuts! We got amazing news today! TV Line reported that Chris and Patty Jenkins reunited on One Day She’ll Darken, a limited series set up at TNT.

The six-episode drama, announced on Thursday, is inspired by the autobiography of Fauna Hodel, who in 1949 was given up by her teenage mother to a black restroom attendant in a Nevada casino. Per the official logline, One Day will follow Hodel as she “begins to investigate the secrets to her past,” embarking down a “sinister trail” leading to notorious Hollywood gynecologist Dr. George Hodel, a suspect in the 1947 homicide of Elizabeth Short — aka the “Black Dahlia” murder.

Pine is set to play Jay Singletary, a former marine-turned-hack reporter whose reputation was tarnished by his story exposing Dr. Hodel. Jenkins is on board to direct the pilot, while her husband, author Sam Sheridan (A Fighter’s Heart), is set to write all six episodes. Michael Sugar (13 Reasons Why, The OA) will serve as an executive producer, alongside Pine, Jenkins and Sheridan.

Production on One Day She’ll Darken is expected to begin this fall.
