TNT saw decent success with The Alienist this past year and its returning with the same mystery-murder story, this time with material based on a true story with I Am the Night. Chris Pine is again teaming with Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins for the series.
The first trailer for the series has finally arrived, unveiling a dark noir set in the creepiest corners of Hollywood.

The fact-based story revolves around a girl named Fauna Hodel (India Eisley) who finds out she’s adopted, then runs away from home, determined to find her birth parents. The trail leads her all the way to the sinister Dr. George Hodel, a suspect in the Black Dahlia murder (for the murderinos out there: the real-life Hodel’s son, Steve Hodel, is a Los Angeles detective who has also accused his father of possibly being the Zodiac Killer and committing numerous other murders. Very chill, nothing to see here!).
Pine plays Jay Singletary, a “former Marine-turned-hack reporter/paparazzo,” as TNT puts it, which is one hell of a character journey. He closes in on Fauna’s story, determined to find the truth at the bottom of this grim rabbit hole. This is his Nightcrawler, baby. As the trailer unfolds, it becomes clear that Fauna’s journey also ties to some dark, cult-y circles of the Eyes Wide Shut variety. So that imagery, cradled by the trailer’s rickety score, makes for delectable nightmare fuel.
The mini-series, previously named “One Day She’ll Darken” premieres in January 2019.
