Disney is moving its Chris Pine-starring Coast Guard drama The Finest Hours out of the 2015 awards season and away from Universal’s Steve Jobs biopic.

The period film, directed by Million Dollar Arm’s Craig Gillespie, had been moved from its original release date of Oct 9th 2015 to April 15th 2016, placing the sea-rescue epic right in the middle of awards season.

Now Finest Hours is being released on Jan. 29, 2016, Disney announced Wednesday.

After Disney set Finest Hours for Oct. 9, Universal announced that it would be releasing its Steve Jobs biopic, starring Michael Fassbender as Jobs, on the same date. That month also features the release of a number of other highly anticipated titles, specifically Focus Features’ London Has Fallen (Oct. 2), Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak (Oct. 16) and Jem and the Holograms (Oct. 23). By pushing back the film, Disney can also release it under its new Imax slate deal, announced Wednesday morning. Finest Hours is getting a 3D wide release.

In addition to Pine, Finest Hours stars Eric Bana, Casey Affleck and Ben Foster. The film, based on the book of the same name by Casey Sherman, tells the true story of the 1952 Coast Guard rescue mission to save the crews of two oil tankers hit by a Noreaster off the New England coast

With its new date, Finest Hours is being released in the same corridor that American Sniper was released in this year, with the film going on to earn $535.9 million worldwide.

The Disney title could also get some promotion ahead of another big Disney film: the latest Star Wars movie, which is now opening before Finest Hours.

The Coast Guard thriller will open on the October 9 date originally set for the animated family film, which is pushed to 2016

Disney Studios on Tuesday swapped the release dates of two high-profile movies. The Chris Pine Coast Guard thriller “The Finest Hours” will open on the October 9, the date that the Jon Favreau-directed remake of “The Jungle Book” had been set for. The animated family film will now open on April 15, 2016.

The new date will put “The Finest Hours,” which co-stars Casey Affleck and is directed by Craig Gillespie, up against Relativity’s Halle Berry thriller “Kidnap” and Warner Bros.’ remake of “Vacation.”

Production is scheduled to begin in September on The Finest Hours starring Chris Pine, Academy Award® and Golden Globe® nominee Casey Affleck and Holliday Grainger.

The thriller, which will be directed by Craig Gillespie (Million Dollar Arm), will shoot on location in Quincy and Chatham, Massachusetts.

In February of 1952, one of the worst storms to ever hit the East Coast struck New England, damaging an oil tanker off the coast of Cape Cod and literally ripping it in half. On a small lifeboat faced with frigid temperatures and 70-foot high waves, four members of the Coast Guard set out to rescue the more than 30 stranded sailors trapped aboard the rapidly-sinking vessel. The Finest Hours is the story of their heroic mission, which is still considered the greatest small boat rescue in Coast Guard history.

The film is produced by James Whitaker and Dorothy Aufiero. The screenplay is by Academy Award® nominees Paul Tamsay & Eric Johnson (The Fighter) and Academy Award nominee Scott Silver (The Fighter) based on the book by Casey Sherman and Michael J. Tougias. Michael J. Tougias will be released in the U.S. in Fall, 2015.

Says Dorothy Aufiero,

“We are thrilled to be able to film The Finest Hours on location in Massachusetts, and are grateful to the Massachusetts Film Office for all their support.”
The Finest Hours comes to theaters in 2015 and stars Chris Pine, Graham McTavish, Casey Affleck, Josh Stewart. The film is directed by Craig Gillespie.
